Art with a Story

“Shalom” is based on a photo reference of myself. To begin I used charcoal to create a gestural image on the Masonite. Then, I applied an under-painting using thin amounts of paint. These first two stages are very expressive and loose. The second stage is mostly alla prima, where I developed the image to a higher degree of realism.

Shalom is Hebrew for peace. Fear makes itself out to be a mountain we cannot overcome; but that same mountain can elevate us and make us stronger. In the midst of our fears and struggles it is possible retain equanimity, or shalom.

Masonite is mounted on a 3 inch deep black, wooden frame. The frame is flush with the Masonite. Painting includes found objects (feathers).
