In the central part of the Istrian Peninsula sits a medieval, hilltop town Motovun. Over the years, it has been a part of either Italy, Croatia, or at one point Rome. Now home to 500 permanent residents, its primarily known as the birthplace for racecar driver Mario Andretti and his brother Aldo. They raced handcrafted wooden cars through the steep streets.

Just outside the walled city are colorful Venetian colonial houses that dot the hillside overlooking the Mirna River Valley and the nearby Motovun Forest. These days, the forests now give this region its current tourist draw the prized black and white truffles that are gathered every year by truffle hunters with their specialty trained dogs.

I took this shot from the top of thick fortress walls into the valley below. A thick blanket of fog had just started to part, exposing the vineyards below.
