Despite a background in Psychology, Social Work, Special Education, Spiritual Counseling and Alternative Healing, I was drawn to take a workshop on unleashing one's creativity. During the course of this workshop, I became passionate about finding an outlet for artistic expression. I explored various mediums such as acrylics, watercolor pencil, watercolor and airbrush with acrylic. I soon began working with a creative partner, and we discovered a unique airbrush technique and created our own business called Enchanted Gardenscapes, selling to local venues. Simultaneously, I continued to explore fine art courses and workshops to discover which media might feel like a match for my desire to express myself in this new found way. I moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2005 and discovered pastels. This medium immediately took center stage in my life and I've continued exploring deeper and deeper ways of expressing myself through this rich, sensuous media. I find that in being able to work directly with my hands, I'm able become more personally involved with both the art and the art form itself. ARTIST STATEMENT Over the years, my art has evolved into more of an internal process. I frequently wake up with a message or an image that wants to be painted, often coming from what I experience as the Divine: the mysterious embodiment of freedom and enlightenment. Initially, I wasn't consciously using this spiritual connection in my art expression as I do now. I've given myself permission to play... to come more from my heart than from technique and to focus on my love of nature and Divine manifestation as I create. Standing very still before a blank piece of paper, I open up to whatever wants to come forth: a pear in a make-believe universe, flowers made out of a heart, or landscapes that feel deliciously alive and bring me joy or have a deeper message about which I want to speak. A vision begins to form in my mind's eye before I pick up the pastels, a medium that lets me get my hands right into it, pushing the color around on the paper. Like finger painting, with pastels, nothing separates me from the art itself. Where once I depended on the landscapes in my outer world, now it's coming from and inner landscape where there aren't any rules stopping me from honoring who I am, which in turn gives implicit permission for anyone else to honor who they are.
