The natural world is deeply beautiful and nurturing to me. The cycle of seasons, the changing color and shape of clouds, the grasses moving in the wind, the rush of water, reflecting shadow and light--all these sights become subject matter for my abstract work. In my painting process I draw upon the Alchemical concepts of Spirit in Matter and the connection between heaven and earth, that magical juncture of sky and land. I strive to invoke that which is mystical and invisible, through shifting light and color and non-objective form.

I spend a long time gathering images, observing color and energy, discerning what is central to the concept that I wish to capture through abstraction.  When I begin to work, I start from the accumulation of those concepts, but at some point, I enter into a dialogue with my work and allow the relationship between myself and the  subject matter and the canvas to emerge.  This is respectful  and natural to me.  Long ago, I realized that while I was in charge of some part of the creative process, something larger was speaking through me that I needed to honor.  In the end, if I have done that, the painting feels true and good.

I believe that whatever I create, comes through me as a gift in some respect and that it is my job, my responsibility to pay attention to the thunder of form, the symphony of color that is clamoring to be seen, waiting to be heard and then figure out how to render that in a physical form.  I once heard a gifted sand-play therapist say that the artist is constantly bombarded by internal images, and that her primary job is to sort out which image to respond to, to attend to.  For me, to make art, is to respond to a spiritual imperative, to that which has soulful resonance for me.  If I give myself to this process, I am involved in creating a world, not unlike one that Paul Klee describes here: “Everything vanishes around me, and works are born as if out of the void. Ripe, graphic fruits fall off. My hand has become the obedient instrument of a remote will.”

I am a psychotherapist, creativity coach and artist, living and practicing in Evergreen, Colorado. I have two master’s degrees--one in Humanities, with an emphasis on Art and Spirituality--and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies; Psychology.  In my private practice, I specialize in empowering people to strengthen their creative resources and innovative self-expression as part of their commitment to a transformative path, to forge new meaning in their lives.

I have painted and sold my work all my life and pursued many careers that have involved the arts.  I have been a graphic artist and a teacher in language arts and humanities. In the 1990’s, I owned and curated an art gallery, called Hichiwa Studios, which featured local well-known artists and which won a Best of Westword Award for small art galleries. I also had the honor of being a Fulbright Scholar to Egypt in 2005, for which I won a Title V Award for Creative Excellence.   I teach and facilitate creative writing workshops and am writing a book called The Thirsty Well: Sourcing the Deep Creative through Writing.

As you can see, creating and supporting people in their creative lives is my passion!
